So This is What a Nightmare Looks Like...

Diablo II is perhaps the most awaited sequel of the year (Ok, so QuakeIII was this year too, but it was at least the most awaited RPG.) It should come as no surprise then, that it is also one of the quickest games to fly off the shelves in all time.

My first encounters with Diablo (the previous game) were before I was acquainted with Action Role Playing Games (ARPGs) were simply overhearing other people on IRC discussing it. I would hear them discuss building up their characters, the armor, and the fights. I never understood if Diablo was an RPG or a First Person Shooter (FPS) by listening to the discussions. Finally, about two years after the game had been out, I was apparently very bored, and decided to download the demo that was, at the time, considered to be massive. I was floored. Excellent graphics, though 2D, considering it was over two years old, and nearly inexplicable gameplay. It was action like an FPS, but character and item statistics like an RPG. It was the apparent to me the reason why I had no clue what type of game it was. There weren't any other games like it! Yes, Diablo started a genre that has perhaps had more clones, some successful, some not, than even Quake, the ARPG. Of these were Everquest, Darkstone, Revenant, and the more recent: Vampire: The Redemption.

Finally I grabbed a copy of the full version and spent months on, Blizzard's online gaming service, literally doing little else but play Diablo. Since then I had heard of the sequel. Some things impressed me, other things frightened me quite a bit. After a few false starts for the release window, I had forgotten about the game entirely and was about to give up on it, when something made me get a twinge for it, and I continued checking the website rather frequently on its progress. Finally, it has been released, and it is responsible for a lot of late nights, and missing a lot of work (namely, its own review!)
