And So it Ends...

You may recall our 2000 Top Pupil awards in which we named Baldur's Gate II the RPG of the year, and gave it an honorable mention for the game of the year. Needless to say, we liked Baldur's Gate II. When I first read about the expansion it was in a news post on the Bioware site describing the end of the saga in a vast expansion. I had recently pulled out the game again and had just beaten it and gone into BG2 withdrawal when I read this, so it was wonderful news, indeed. While I hoped that there would have been a BG3, a large expansion would have to suffice, at least until Neverwinter Nights, and whatever D&D games follow that.

Expansions are always sort of a mixed bag both in development and playing. From a development perspective, all of the programming behind the game is already done, so all that needs to be done is art, maps, and any new items and the like. Though with the Infinity Engine, the art is the grueling part. The biggest problem with expansions to play though, is that they're typically rather short, and the monsters are usually way too tough, seemingly designed by the very minions of evil you're fighting. On the other hand, there are usually features added that make playing far more fun than the original, tweaks to things you didn't like before and a horde of other improvements.
