A Time of Infamy

Little more than the name of World War II must be said, for someone to begin conjuring up mental imagery of the horrors of the vast-scale war. If a single time period could be thought of that depicts the sheer outrageousness of a combat video game or movie, it would be the period of the 1940s.

As terrible as the period was, it was also one of the best times in human history as well. Few other occasions in history involved the vast numbers of people, from various nations and cultures all pulling together for a single cause. This is why it is also one of the most re-created and obsessed periods in history.

Rowan's Battle of Britain depicts two forces of the war. The Lutwaffe: Germany's airforce with more firepower, speed, mass, and sheer numbers than most of the Allied airforces; and the RAF: Britain's ragtag airforce of minimal scrambled troops with seemingly enough willpower to defeat all of the rest of Europe to protect their home, and aircraft that looked little more capable than a glued model airplane.

For those of you who don't know that much about World War II, or at least the history of it beyond the part your own nation may or may not have played in it, toward the end of the war, Germany launched a massive air attack against Britain in which they spent months bombarding strategic targets and wearing away at the RAF's forces. The culmination of this battle was the final conflict of the Lutwaffe's massive air raids on London with enough planes that it quite literally blanketed the sky (it seems like quite a stretch because of the way modern wars are fought, but they really did need hundreds and thousands of planes to do the job.) The Big Wing formation was launched by the RAF to counter attack, and against absolutely overwhelming and unrealistic odds, Britain, somehow, won.
